Pastoral Job Description

Purpose of Position:  The Pastor is the spiritual leader of the church.  He is responsible to the Lord and the church to primarily proclaim the gospel and teach the bible.  He is to be engaged in pastoral care to the congregation, provide supervisory and administrative leadership in all areas of congregational care including paid and volunteer staff.  We are looking for a pastor that can grow the church’s ministry and attract more worshippers.

MINISTRIES
Worship
  • Plan and conduct worship services with church staff and lay participants, in a way that engages the congregation spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally, motivating commitment and action.
  • Preach effective sermons that help congregants develop spiritually and relate faith and scripture to life.
  • Lead the congregation in observing biblical baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
  • Lead in planning special services.
  • Encourage congregants to discern their own spiritual gifts, develop their gifts and their own leadership abilities, and engage in the ministries to which they are called.
  • Seek to promote unity within the church.

Pastoral Care
  • Visit sick, homebound, hospitalized, and grieving church members.
  • Minister to persons and families in crisis.
  • Provide personal counseling within the parameters of his expertise and make referrals to competent individuals/agencies outside the congregation when needed.
  • Maintain and implement a plan for maintaining regular contact with church members.
  • Officiate at weddings and funerals.

Outreach
  • Participate in evangelism efforts through preaching and giving invitations during worship services, revival or other special services, visitation, and other outreach efforts.
  • Coordinate efforts in managing, evaluating, and expanding outreach programs.
  • Contact potential members and visitors.

Administration
  • Serve as administrator of the paid church staff.
  • Supervise the work of the ministry staff, both the volunteer and paid church staff.
  • Provide regular guidance, evaluation, and feedback to the people in various ministry roles.
  • Moderate the regularly scheduled and special business meetings of the church.
  • Oversee church discipline and manage conflict in the church.  Seek to reconcile relationships and promote unity within the church.
  • Clearly and consistently communicate with pastoral staff and the chairman of the deacons regarding time needed away from church responsibilities for vacation, family obligations, rest, and/or professional development.  Work with pastoral staff to ensure ministry responsibilities, including the pulpit are covered.
  • Oversee the missionary partnerships of the church.

Qualifications
  • Must be a licensed and ordained minister of the gospel.
  • Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and five years of experience in the ministry.
  • Possess a solid understanding of Christian Beliefs and Theology.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Professional ability to plan and prioritize tasks, demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, and be able to keep personal member information confidential.
  • Must possess the following attributes: personal relationship with Jesus, integrity, passion, vision, humility, fiscal responsibility, purpose driven, good communication skills, encourager, mentoring skills, peaceful, patient, a teacher, gentle, not quick tempered, demonstrated perseverance.
